How to Clean an AeroGarden Sprout (Step-by-Step Guide)
As the outdoor growing season starts to wind down (I refuse to say it’s fully over), I always shift my focus back to indoor gardening.
That means my hydroponic systems are about to work overtime again.
Before I start a new round of planting, I always take time to clean everything properly—especially my AeroGarden Sprout units. Today I’m walking through exactly how to clean an AeroGarden Sprout so it’s ready for a fresh planting cycle.

Why Cleaning Your AeroGarden Sprout Matters
Between growing cycles, your system can build up:
Algae
Sediment
Plant debris
Root residue
Cleaning between plantings ensures:
Healthier seedlings
Better water circulation
Fewer algae issues
Longer pump life
Even though the Sprout is a smaller system, it still needs proper maintenance.
Step 1: Power Down the Unit
Start by:
Unplugging the power supply
Disconnecting the pump
Then carefully remove all plants and empty the reservoir.
If you have plants you want to save, you can transplant them into soil at this stage.
Step 2: Empty and Rinse the Reservoir
Take the unit to the sink and pour out the old water.
Compared to larger systems, the Sprout’s smaller reservoir makes this step much easier (and less messy).
Step 3: Remove the Pump
The AeroGarden Sprout pump is held in place by two clips.
To remove it:
Release the front clip easily
Carefully pry the back clip loose (a butter knife can help if needed)
⚠️ Tip: Be gentle—this step can feel a bit fiddly.
Once removed, be sure not to lose the small filter underneath the pump.
Step 4: Clean the Grow Bowl
Use:
Warm water
A soft cloth or sponge
Avoid soap and abrasive scrubbers.
The goal is to remove residue without scratching the surface, since scratches can encourage algae growth later.
Step 5: Clean the Pump and Filter
Now focus on the pump itself:
Rinse the outside thoroughly
Scrub the intake holes gently
Clean the filter under warm water
Remove any trapped debris or roots
If roots are present, carefully tease them out with tweezers or your fingers.
Step 6: Deep Clean Inside the Pump
This is the step most people skip—but it makes a big difference.
To open the pump:
Locate the small notch on the housing
Gently pry it open
Clean inside using a Q-tip
Once clean:
Reassemble the pump
Reattach the filter
Snap it back into the grow bowl
Make sure the cord faces the correct direction when reinstalling.
Step 7: Clean the Grow Deck
One of the benefits of the Sprout is its simple design.
Just:
Wipe the grow deck with warm water
Clean all visible residue
Unlike larger AeroGarden models, there’s no complicated disassembly required.
Step 8: Sterilize the System
Now it’s time to sanitize your AeroGarden Sprout.
You can use either vinegar or bleach.
Option 1: Vinegar Method (Natural Clean)
Mix:
1:1 vinegar and water
For the Sprout (approx. 5 cups total):
2.5 cups vinegar
2.5 cups water
Steps:
Fill reservoir
Run system for 30 minutes
Empty and refill with clean water
Run for 5 minutes
Empty again
Option 2: Bleach Method (Deep Clean)
Mix:
1/8 cup bleach per 5 cups water
Steps:
Run system for 30 minutes
Drain completely
Refill with clean water
Run for 5 minutes
Drain again
Let dry fully (24–48 hours recommended)
Step 9: Reassemble and Restart
Once everything is clean and dry:
Reinstall pump and filter
Refill with fresh water
Add nutrients
Reconnect power
Run the system briefly to ensure everything is functioning properly.
Step 10: Replant Your AeroGarden Sprout
Now the fun part—starting fresh.
Restock your system with:
New grow sponges
Fresh nutrients
Quality seeds
Great beginner crops include:
Lettuce
Herbs
Compact peppers
Small tomato varieties
Final Thoughts
Cleaning your AeroGarden Sprout might feel a bit tedious, but it makes a huge difference in plant health and system performance.
A clean system means:
Stronger growth
Fewer issues
Better harvests
A smoother growing cycle
Think of it as resetting your indoor garden for success.
